Player and Parent Information

The information below has been developed to inform players & parents/guardians as to what is involved when it comes to playing Junior Representative basketball for Mackay

MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the MBI Junior Representative Program is to provide a safe, supportive, high-performance environment that builds the skills and knowledge of our players and coaches.

Through quality coaching, structured training and competitive play, we endeavour to promote a culture of teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, & discipline while offering clear pathways to further progress in basketball.

While our teams play to win and pursue competitive excellence, Mackay Basketball is committed to achieving success through development, in a program that is enjoyable & rewarding for all involved.

PLAYING PHILOSOPHY

MBI Junior Representative teams aim to be disciplined, competitive & hard to play against, with players building strong game understanding & a team-first mindset.

Our approach centers on preparation, persistence, hard work & maximum effort, adopting a consistent style of play that prioritises long term athletic development.

Representative basketball demands a commitment to high performance & personal development to help our athletes achieve success on the court, in the classroom & in life.

MACKAY BASKETBALL’S VISION

The MBI Junior Representative Program brings together committed players, coaches, team officials & administrators to build a strong, successful & respected program.

Our vision is for Mackay Basketball to be:

  • Competitive — performing successfully at NQJBC Carnivals, BQ State Championships & in National competitions
  • Supported — players & coaches are supported in their development pathway, & backed by our families and the wider Mackay community
  • Respected — recognised throughout the basketball community for our development, professionalism, sportsmanship & performance

COMMITMENT TO THE PROGRAM

Representative basketball requires a significant commitment from both players and families, including training, competition, travel and associated costs.

Players are expected to be available for all representative commitments, and unavailability may potentially lead to exclusion from the Junior Representative Program on a case-by-case basis.

  • TRAINING – Players are expected to attend a minimum of two 90-minute training sessions per week.
  • SCRIMMAGES – Players are expected to attend any additional scrimmages that are scheduled by their coach.
  • NQJBC CARNIVALS – Our teams compete in the North Queensland Junior Basketball Competition (NQJBC), with tournaments played across Cairns, Townsville and Mackay – players need to be available to play on the designated dates from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon.
  • BQ STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS – Our teams also compete in the Basketball Queensland State Championships which can be held at venues all across Queensland – these four-day events are held during the school holidays, and some teams may hold a shootaround training session at the host location the day prior to the competition commencing.
  • TEAM BONDING – At NQJBC Carnivals or State Championships, there may be Team Bonding events that all participants are expected to make themselves available to attend.

Our coaches are dedicated volunteers who make a significant commitment to the development of our players, often giving up valuable time with their own families. We ask that players and families respect this commitment by demonstrating the same level of dedication, communication and support throughout the season.

TRAVEL

Players and families are responsible for arranging their own transport to and from all tournaments, whether that be in a private car, or carpool.

TRIALS

MBI will conduct a minimum of two selection trials, with coaches & the appointed Selection Panel assessing athletes against the Junior Representative Program selection criteria.

MBI reserves the right to extend the trial process where required to ensure athletes are appropriately evaluated & final team selections promote the best possible outcomes.

PLAYER SELECTION

Players will be assessed against a range of criteria, including:

  • Basketball skill level and game sense demonstrated in competitive play.
  • Mental ability, including resilience, mental toughness and a growth mindset.
  • Physical and athletic ability, including speed, strength, endurance and lateral quickness.
  • Coachability, including the ability to understand and execute skills and strategies following instruction.
  • Desire to learn and develop, demonstrating a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
  • Team-first attitude, including a willingness to accept their role and put the interests of the team first.

TEAM SELECTION

When selecting teams, Mackay Basketball considers both the immediate needs of each team and the long-term development of individual players. Our aim is to place players in an environment best suited to their current ability and development, while providing opportunities for them to reach their full potential throughout their junior representative pathway.

The Junior Representative Program aims to develop players with the skills, game knowledge and understanding required to progress into senior basketball, including Mackay Basketball’s senior domestic competitions and NBL1 programs. Selection also recognises each player’s commitment to training, individual development, coachability, work ethic and ability to contribute positively within a team environment.

TEAM ANNOUNCEMENTS

Team selections will be finalised following the completion of the trial and selection process, with all players and families notified of the outcome via email. Selected players must accept their position within 48 hours of notification and pay the required non-refundable Representative Levy deposit to confirm their place in the team.

STYLE OF PLAY

Our Style of Play Sessions are designed to help players and coaches understand how we want Mackay Basketball teams to play.

These sessions focus on developing the key skills, decision-making and habits that translate directly into our representative program. Rather than simply running drills, players learn how to read the game, make the right decisions and play within the Mackay Basketball style of play.

The sessions can cover areas such as:

  • Offensive concepts and decision-making
  • Playing with pace and purpose
  • Defensive principles and team defence
  • Reading advantages and making basketball decisions
  • Spacing, movement and playing as a team
  • Building the habits and standards expected in Mackay representative basketball

Ultimately, Style of Play Sessions help create consistency across our Mackay programs, giving players a clearer understanding of what is expected as they progress through our representative pathway.

EXPENSES

Junior Representative Basketball involves travel, accommodation and tournament expenses, and Mackay Basketball operates the program on a user-pay system, meaning costs associated with participation are shared by players and their families.

As a guide, families should budget approximately $2,000–$2,500 for the representative season, depending on tournament locations, travel and accommodation arrangements. Costs include the Representative Levy, three NQJBC tournaments, Basketball Queensland State Championships, training, uniforms, administration and other associated program costs. Individual player travel costs are additional.

The Representative Levy is $355 per player and contributes towards the core costs of participating in the Mackay Basketball Junior Representative Program. The levy includes:

  • Representative warm-up shirt
  • Training court hire
  • Personalised playing jerseys
  • Team equipment
  • Program administration
  • NQJBC team nomination fees

SPONSORSHIP

Team sponsorship is another opportunity to help reduce the costs associated with Junior Representative Basketball. All sponsorship must receive prior approval from Mackay Basketball before businesses are approached, and sponsorship funds must support the team rather than an individual player.
