Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Under 8's season run all year?
We have introduced a year-round competition model to make basketball more affordable for families. Previously, the Under 8s competition cost $160 per season, meaning families paid $320 for a full year of basketball. Under the new model, the total cost is just $200 for the entire year!
Can I withdraw my child at the end of Term 1, 2027 to play other sports?
Yes! Families who pay the full annual fee upfront can withdraw their child at the end of Term 1, 2027, and receive a $40 refund, provided they have not used a Play On Sports Voucher.
This means eligible families who participate during Terms 4 and 1 can pay a total of $160, equivalent to the previous cost of one season.
Am I eligible for a refund if I use a Play On Sports Voucher?
No. The $40 refund is only available to families who pay the annual fee upfront and do not use a Play On Sports Voucher.
When are Under 8's games played?
Under 8s games are typically played on Saturday mornings, with games scheduled at 8:00 am and 9:00 am.
Are scores kept during games?
Yes, scores are recorded during every game. However, if the scoreboard displays a 30-point margin, no further points will be added to the scoreboard. Scores will continue to be recorded in Basketball Connect via the iPad.
Are there Finals or a Ladder?
No. The Under 8s competition does not have Finals or a ladder. Our focus is on helping young players develop their skills, build confidence, make friends and enjoy playing basketball in a fun and supportive environment.
Are coaches allowed on the court to provide instruction?
Yes! Coaches are encouraged to move around the court during games to provide guidance, help players understand the rules and teach them the fundamentals of basketball. This helps create a positive learning environment where players can develop their skills and build confidence as they play.
Are there any changes to the regular rules of basketball?
Yes. To make the game more suitable for young players, Under 8s basketball is played 4-on-4 instead of the traditional 5-on-5 format. Games are also played on hoops lowered to 8 feet to help players develop their shooting technique and experience success.
What happens at half-time?
At half-time, every Under 8s player gets the opportunity to attempt a free throw, with each successful basket contributing one point to their team’s score.
To ensure fairness, both teams are given the same number of free-throw attempts. For example, if one team has four players and the other has eight, each player on the team with four players will receive two attempts, matching the eight attempts available to the team with eight players.
