MACKAY, QUEENSLAND – Mackay Basketball are excited to announce the signing of Bryan Michaels to the McDonald’s Mackay Meteors for the 2020 NBL1 North Season.
24-year old Michaels joins the Meteors following playing stints in Western Australia and Tasmania.
A dual Australian and United States citizen, Michaels played college basketball for the Concordia University Cavaliers in Portland, USA, where in his senior season he averaged 13 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists per game, while being named to the Department of Athletics Honour Roll.
Upon graduating from Concordia in May 2018, Michaels journeyed to Perth, joining the Lakeside Lightning in the Western Australian State Basketball League (SBL). Across 19 games the 191cm guard averaged 16 points and 4 rebounds while connecting on an impressive 44% from behind the 3-point line. In a mid-season match up with the ladder-leading Geraldton Buccaneers, Michaels dropped 37 points, connecting on 6-8 from downtown.
His consistent play for the Lightning earned Michaels a development player contract with the Perth Wildcats for the 2018-2019 National Basketball League (NBL) season. At the conclusion of the NBL season, Bryan joined the Hobart Huskies, where his 2019 campaign was cut short due to injury. Michaels returned to the United States to focus on his recovery and after eight months on the sideline, he’s ready to attack his fourth season down under, this time with the McDonald’s Mackay Meteors in the NBL1 North.
“I’m so excited to be in Mackay and to be a part of this historically great program,” Michaels said.
“There have been a lot of great players and teams to play for the McDonald’s Meteors. We want to continue to build on that culture and success.”
“I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity to play with the McDonald’s Meteors this season and also compete in a very good NBL1 North competition.”
McDonald’s Meteors Head Coach Joel Khalu was also happy about the recruitment of Michaels.
“Bryan is a great fit for our group,” Khalu said.
“We needed to add more perimeter shooting and another guy who can stretch the floor and Bryan certainly does that.”
“He’s also really versatile defensively with the ability to guard multiple spots, which is another big plus.”
“His NBL experience from Perth and being involved in the Wildcats program is also something I’m looking forward him bringing to our program. That day-in, day-out professionalism and setting an example for our other players. I think this is going to be really important when it comes to our team culture.”
The McDonald’s Meteors open the 2020 NBL1 North season on April 25 at the McDonald’s Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium against Toowoomba.
