Mackay Face Rivals Rockhampton in Central Queensland Cup Season Opener

MACKAY, QUEENSLAND – It’s been over a year since the McDonald’s Meteors and Global Product Search Meteorettes were on court for a senior representative basketball game, but all that changes this Saturday night when both Mackay teams face off against rivals Rockhampton in the ConocoPhillips CQ Cup season opener.

The Meteors and Meteorettes will travel south to Adani Arena on Saturday afternoon, where the teams will be keen to get their 2020 CQ Cup campaigns started with a win.

Played over eight-weeks, the CQ Cup will see Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg do battle for Central Queensland basketball supremacy. In addition to the Mackay vs Rockhampton matchup on Saturday night, Gladstone will also travel to Bundaberg on the same day for round one.

Mackay Basketball NBL1 Program General Manager Joel Khalu said winning two from two in Rockhampton wouldn’t be an easy task for his visiting troops.

“It doesn’t matter what type of game it is, juniors or seniors, whenever Mackay plays Rocky there’s always a bit of extra pride involved,” Khalu said.

“I think the rivalry is fantastic and it’s great for the players to finally get back on court after such a long break and renew it in round one of the new CQ Cup.”

“Both of our clubs will be fielding relatively younger sides, which gives those players a great opportunity to see where they’re at on this stage.”

“Rocky have some outstanding young talent on both their men’s and women’s rosters, so it’s a big challenge for both our McDonald’s Meteors and Global Product Search Meteorettes to go down there and steal both,” Khalu added.

The Global Product Search Meteorettes will face the CQ University Rockhampton Cyclones at 6pm, while the McDonald’s Meteors battle the McDonald’s Rockhampton Rockets at 8pm.
