Dual MVP Freeburn Returns to Meteorettes

MACKAY, QUEENSLAND – Mackay Basketball are pleased to announce that team captain and two-time club Most Valuable Player Heidi Freeburn has re-signed with the Global Product Search Mackay Meteorettes for the 2020 NBL1 North Season.

2020 will be Freeburns’ fourth campaign with the red and black and her thirteenth overall state league season.

In 2019, the 34-year old averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists across 19 appearances for the Meteorettes, leading the side to the QBL quarterfinals.

Freeburn said she was excited about her return to Mackay.

“I love playing here,” Freeburn said.

“The professionalism of the program, we have great sponsors and the community are fantastic.”

“We have one of the best home crowds in the league. Those same people, they come out and support us week in and week out, no matter the result.”

“As an individual for me it’s about keeping my body right and mentoring the girls coming up.”

“As a team it’s about trying to win all of our home games and locking in a playoff spot.”

Global Product Search Meteorettes Head Coach Rhys Martin was also pleased with the retention of Freeburn.

“Heidi has been a great asset to the club for a number of years,” Martin said.

“She brings a style of basketball that juniors in Mackay need to watch and learn from. Her poise and leadership, she has a  real calming influence on the group, and that’s something I’ll continue to expect from her.”

“I also want her to keep being that perimeter scoring threat, while also taking on the challenge defensively of stopping the other team’s best perimeter scorer,” Martin added.

The Global Product Search Meteorettes open the 2020 NBL1 North season on April 25 at the McDonald’s Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium against Toowoomba.
