McDonald’s Mackay Meteorettes Welcome Shaneice Swain

MACKAY, QUEENSLAND – Mackay Basketball is pleased to announce Shaneice Swain as the McDonald’s Mackay Meteorettes first NBL1 North signing for season 2022.

Rising star Swain will join her Meteorettes teammates in April once she finishes her rookie WNBL campaign with the University of Canberra Capitals.

The 18-year-old has been one of the countries elite junior prospects, having graduated from the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence and representing Australia in under 15, 17 and 19 age levels.

A starter for the Australian Gems at the under 19 FIBA World Cup in Hungary last August, the 177cm guard averaged 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists, helping lead the national side to a silver medal.

McDonald’s Mackay Meteorettes NBL1 North Head Coach Rob Grieve was excited to name Swain as his first NBL1 signing.

“Shaneice is a great fit for my style of play,” Grieve said.

“She’s an outstanding athlete who plays the game in a very dynamic way.”

“She can handle the ball and score via a variety of methods.”

“Her length also makes her a versatile defender.”

“It’s fantastic that Shaneice has chosen Mackay and our McDonald’s Meteorettes NBL1 program for her WNBL offseason development.”

“I think she’s going to have a breakout season in the NBL1 and quickly become a crowd favourite here in Mackay, especially with the tenacious way she goes about her on-court business.”

Originally from Far North Queensland, Swain is familiar with McDonald’s Mackay Stadium having played at multiple tournaments in the Crater as both a youngster and also in the QBL with the Cairns Dolphins.

Swain last played in the QBL as a 16-year-old back in 2019, where she averaged an impressive 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists across 14 games.

More McDonald’s Mackay Meteorettes player signings will be announced in the coming weeks.
