Scott McKenzie Appointed As Mackay Meteorettes Head Coach for 2021 NBL1 North Season

MACKAY, QUEENSLAND – Mackay Basketball are pleased to announce the appointment of Scott McKenzie as Head Coach of the Global Product Search Mackay Meteorettes for the 2021 NBL1 North Season.

Fresh off guiding the women’s side to an inaugural CQ Cup title a fortnight ago, McKenzie will continue in the lead coach role, preparing the Meteorettes for their maiden NBL1 North campaign.

McKenzie is no stranger in Mackay Basketball circles, having played for the Meteors in the Queensland State League from 1984 to 1994, before later making a shift into the coaching ranks.

He served as Head Coach of the Mackay Meteorettes previously in the QBL from 2008 to 2009 and then as an Assistant Coach in 2010, before making the move south to Brisbane. While based in Brisbane, McKenzie spent time coaching for the South West Metro Pirates and Brisbane Basketball associations, while also mentoring players in Queensland South junior state teams.

In planning for the NBL1 North season, the 53-year-old expressed his excitement about the role.

“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity, being back home in Mackay and coaching a high-quality program.”

“It was great getting the chance to work with the players throughout our successful CQ Cup campaign, but with that now done, it’s time to shift focus to 2021 and making sure we hit the ground running in preparation for what’s shaping as a highly competitive NBL1 North women’s competition.”

“The first priorities are player retention and recruitment and making sure we get the right pieces in place to build a solid roster.”

“This means combining our local talent with the right mix of import players.”

“It’s definitely an exciting time for the club and I’m already looking forward to getting to work.”

The 2021 NBL1 North season is scheduled to tip-off in May next year.
